I start writing about (chemical) film decay, disintegration, about the death of cinema – as it used to be, about memory traces, about unstable surfaces, insecure images, dreams that are haunting as the nitrate base loses its clarity, about archives and time/temporalities.
How come that I haven’t guessed how melancholic it is to try make a sense of these material/ontological questions.
I wish I can (and I will!) write more than a mourning paper and see there an archive that is optimistic and opening up to reach us in a soothing way, though I am not sure whether the digital flicking images and their immaterial realm, without degradation and loss, with a time that can be paused at a click, thus commodified, hold the answer.
